What periods do these lights cover?

The lighting fixtures span the late nineteenth century through to the nineteen forties, with a strong concentration of pieces from the Edwardian era and the early twentieth century. You also encounter Victorian oil lamps and later industrial styles, demonstrating how domestic and commercial illumination evolved across these decades.

How were these glass shades used?

Glass shades served to soften the glare of early electric bulbs and oil flames while directing illumination into specific areas of a room. Opaline and moonstone versions provided a gentle, diffused glow for living spaces. Cut glass and crystal shades maximised sparkle in entrance halls and formal reception rooms, while specialised prismatic glass managed light in larger interiors.

Can I hang a hall lantern from a standard ceiling?

Most hanging lanterns and pendant lights come with suspension loops or chains that allow for adjustment to standard domestic ceiling heights. Professional installation is recommended to ensure the weight is supported securely. Heavier bronze frames and multi-light chandeliers require fixings appropriate to their substantial metal and glass construction.

How do I distinguish Arts and Crafts lighting?

Arts and Crafts lighting emphasises honest construction and simpler metalwork, frequently executed in brass or copper without excessive surface ornament. These pieces often show influences from designers of the period. They contrast with ornate French styles or classical Corinthian column lamps by focusing on form and utility rather than historical revivalism.
