How do I clean an old wool rug?

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating power brush helps remove surface dust and grit from the wool pile. Professional specialist cleaning remains essential for deep maintenance to protect the natural fibres and dyes. Avoid using domestic wet cleaning machines or harsh chemical detergents on antique textiles. Spot cleaning requires blotting gently with plain water rather than rubbing the affected area.

Are these rugs suitable for daily use?

Wool and cotton construction provides natural durability for everyday living spaces when placed over appropriate underlay. Heavier traffic areas benefit from sturdy room-size carpets, while finer pieces suit lighter-use rooms. Rotating the rug periodically ensures even wear patterns across the surface. Protecting the textile from direct, harsh sunlight prevents premature fading of the botanical dyes.

How do I identify a regional style?

Regional characteristics appear in the specific drawing of floral motifs, knotting structure, and border arrangements. Persian workshops often display intricate medallions, whereas Donegal pieces reflect Arts and Crafts sensibilities. Examining the reverse side reveals the density of the weave and the materials used in the foundation. Comparing these structural clues helps distinguish between Persian origins and Turkish or Indian productions.

What underlay should I use?

A breathable, non-slip mesh underlay protects the cotton foundation from friction against hard flooring. This simple addition also prevents the rug from shifting during daily movement. Quality underlay provides extra cushioning underfoot, which reduces stress on the wool pile. It also allows air circulation beneath the textile to maintain stable conditions.
