How do I clean antique brass handles?

Warm soapy water and a soft cloth remove accumulated grime safely without stripping the aged patina. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that destroy the historic surface character. Dry the metal thoroughly after washing to prevent water spotting. A light application of microcrystalline wax protects the cleaned surface from future tarnishing.

Will these fit modern doors?

Many period spindles and fixings differ in dimension from contemporary metric standards. Check the spindle thickness and screw hole centres before attempting installation on modern doors. Some adjustments by a joiner may be necessary to accommodate older mechanisms. The effort ensures the historic hardware functions correctly in a modern setting.

How do I date an Edwardian handle?

Stylistic cues such as stylized floral motifs point towards Art Nouveau influences common in the period. Robust rectilinear forms typically indicate Arts and Crafts manufacture. Examining the manufacturing marks and screw types helps narrow down the production decade. Cast numbers on the reverse often provide clues to the foundry of origin.

Can I use these on exterior doors?

Solid brass and bronze handles withstand outdoor exposure well due to their natural corrosion resistance. Regular maintenance helps protect the metal from severe weather conditions. Ensure any associated iron components are treated to prevent rust formation. Protected porches extend the lifespan of antique exterior hardware significantly.
