How do I care for wooden sculptures?

Keep carved wooden pieces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the timber from drying out and splitting. Dust them gently with a soft, dry cloth without applying modern liquid polishes. Maintaining a stable room temperature protects both the bare wood and any historic surface finishes such as paint, gesso or gold leaf.

Where should I place a pedestal?

Display pedestals and columns suit corners or focal points in a room where they can support lamps, urns or smaller figural sculptures. Ensure the floor is level so that tall, heavy timber stands remain stable. Matching the period of the pedestal with the sculpture placed upon it creates a cohesive arrangement in an interior space.

What is folk art wood carving?

Folk art carvings are unpretentious decorative objects made by local artisans rather than academic sculptors. These pieces include decoy ducks, pull-along toys and animal figures created for everyday or domestic use. Their charm lies in straightforward craftsmanship, regional character and direct interpretations of familiar subjects.

How are different wood types identified?

Oak and walnut display distinct grain patterns and weight, with oak showing prominent medullary rays and walnut offering a smoother, darker hue. Softer woods like limewood or cedar present finer grain structures suited to intricate detail work. Examining the underside or unexposed areas helps reveal the natural colour and density of the timber used by the carver.
