How do I clean the glass?

Use a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner applied sparingly to the cloth rather than directly onto the wood. This prevents moisture from damaging the mahogany finish. Take care around delicate glazing bars and astragals so the wooden framework remains dry and intact.

Can shelves be adjusted?

Many period cabinets feature fixed wooden shelving due to their traditional construction methods. Adjustability depends entirely on the specific interior setup. Reviewing the internal configuration helps determine if your books or china will fit comfortably inside.

Where should I place it?

Position the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the mahogany polish and prevent timber warping. Stable ambient temperatures preserve the wood. Corner units suit smaller wall spaces, while large floor-standing bookcases anchor a principal room.

How do I date a cabinet?

Examine the timber, construction joints, hardware, and stylistic influences to determine the period. Victorian and Edwardian pieces often display distinct revival characteristics. Maker marks or labels, when present inside drawers or on the backboards, provide precise attribution.
