How do I clean an antique crystal chandelier?

Cleaning requires a gentle hand and a specialised glass cleaning solution applied with a soft cloth to each individual prism and metal arm. Avoid harsh chemical sprays that might damage historical gilt finishes or weaken old wiring. Many specialists recommend cleaning pieces in situ by supporting the lower bag while wiping each drop individually. This prevents accidental strain on the historical wire links connecting the crystals.

How do I determine the correct size for a room?

Scale depends primarily on room dimensions and ceiling height, ensuring the fixture leaves adequate clearance beneath while maintaining visual balance. Compact domes and plafonniers suit smaller spaces, whereas multi-arm ballroom fixtures require substantial vertical room. Measure both the floor area and the ceiling height to select a diameter and drop that commands the space without dominating it. Smaller scaled variants work well in hallways or intimate parlours.

What is the difference between glass and crystal?

Traditional crystal contains added lead oxide that increases density, weight, and refractive brilliance compared to standard soda-lime glass. This higher refractive index gives antique crystal drops their distinctive prismatic rainbow sparkle. Examining the edges of the cut facets reveals the sharper, clearer refraction characteristic of lead-rich crystal. Standard glass pieces tend to appear slightly softer in their cut definition.
