What is a curved front tallboy?

A curved front tallboy is a tall storage chest featuring a convex, outwardly projecting facade. It provides deep drawer capacity while introducing softer architectural lines to a room. The listings here primarily feature bow-front chests of drawers and double-tier chests from the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian periods. Each piece utilises the curved profile to catch the light and showcase figured wood veneers.

How do I date a mahogany tallboy?

Dating requires examining the secondary timbers, construction methods, and overall stylistic details. Georgian and Regency pieces often feature hand-cut dovetails and solid mahogany framing, while Victorian and Edwardian examples show different interior woods and machine-made elements. Hardware styles and veneer choices also shift across eras. Earlier pieces rely on subtle cockbeading and boxwood inlay, whereas later nineteenth-century versions often incorporate heavier proportions and distinct polish finishes.

Where should I place a tallboy?

These tall units suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, or large hallways where vertical storage is required without sacrificing floor space. Their imposing height makes them natural anchor points against long walls. Because the front curves outward into the room, ensure adequate clearance around doorways and walkways. Positioning the piece away from direct sunlight protects the delicate mahogany or walnut veneers from fading.

How do I care for wood veneers?

Maintain polished wood surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using silicone-based sprays or harsh chemical cleaners that can degrade the historic finish. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and maintain stable room humidity to prevent the underlying wood veneers from lifting or splitting. Occasional application of quality beeswax helps nourish the antique timber.
