How do I fit a modern mattress?

Many antique frames accommodate standard modern mattress sizes, though exact dimensions can vary due to nineteenth and early twentieth-century manufacturing tolerances. It is prudent to check the internal width and length before sourcing a mattress. Some frames require bespoke bases or custom slatted platforms to ensure proper support within the wooden rails. Consulting the specific dimensions listed for each bed prevents fitting issues.

Are these beds supplied with bases?

Some listings include specific bed bases or wooden platforms within the sale, while others consist solely of the wooden framework. Reviewing the individual title details clarifies whether a base comes with the frame. When a base is absent, a local specialist can construct a suitable platform to support a modern mattress safely. This approach preserves the antique side rails while ensuring daily stability.

How do I care for painted wood?

Maintain painted and cream surfaces by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth to prevent particulate accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads that can damage the underlying gesso and paint. Keep wooden frames away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to minimise paint cracking and wood movement. Minor environmental stability preserves the original finish over decades.

Can I dismantle these beds for transport?

Most antique bedsteads dismantle into standard components consisting of a headboard, footboard, and two side rails. Metal bolts or traditional wooden wedges secure these joints together for stability. Careful handling during dismantling protects the delicate carved wood and painted surfaces from chipping. Professional transport is often recommended for larger king size and super king proportions.
