What were blanket boxes used for originally?

These large chests stored heavy woolen blankets, household linen, and winter garments in large domestic estates. They protected textiles from dust and moths before modern fitted wardrobes became common. Over time, utilitarian versions also served to secure silver, documents, and firewood in various rooms of the house.

How do I tell a Georgian box from a Victorian one?

Georgian examples often utilise native hardwoods like oak and elm with hand-cut joinery and fielded panels. They tend to display more restrained vernacular proportions. Victorian pieces frequently feature softer pine construction, sometimes with painted surfaces or applied iron banding for heavy estate utility.

Can I use an antique chest as a coffee table?

These sturdy wooden boxes provide ideal proportions and flat top surfaces for daily living spaces. Their internal volume offers practical hidden storage for books and modern clutter. Ensure the height suits your seating and verify that the lid remains stable and level before placing items on top.

What is the difference between a coffer and a mule chest?

A standard coffer consists of a single deep compartment accessed entirely through the top lid. This makes it simple and robust for storing bulky textiles. A mule chest adds one or more drawers beneath the main lifting compartment, allowing easier access to smaller items without opening the entire lid.
