What is a classic bedroom dresser?

A classic bedroom dresser is fundamentally a chest of drawers, built in timber such as mahogany, oak, or walnut to provide storage for clothing and textiles. These pieces range from compact Georgian designs with brushing slides to larger Victorian formats featuring multiple stacked drawers and brass handles.

How do I care for antique timber furniture?

Antique timber responds best to stable indoor environments away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight that can dry out the wood. Regular dusting with a dry cloth and occasional application of traditional wax helps maintain the natural sheen and finish of the mahogany or oak.

How can I tell the period of a chest?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, drawer construction methods, handle styles, and overall proportions of the piece. For instance, eighteenth-century examples often display fine bracket feet and hand-cut dovetails, while Edwardian pieces frequently utilise lighter oaks with raised galleries.
