How do I clean a chrome lamp?

Wipe the metal gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without scratching the polished surface. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can strip the vintage plating. For stubborn grime, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, then dry thoroughly immediately afterwards to prevent moisture damage.

Are these lamps safe to use today?

Most vintage pieces retain their original internal wiring, which may not meet modern electrical safety standards. Have a qualified electrician inspect and rewire the fixture before regular daily use. Using modern low-heat LED bulbs helps protect fragile vintage sockets and internal Bakelite components from thermal degradation.

What is a machine age lamp?

A machine age lamp is a light fixture inspired by industrial machinery and mass production during the interwar period. These designs prioritise unadorned utility, exposed hardware, and durable metallic construction. They often incorporate adjustable arms and heavy weighted bases suited for heavy-duty office or workshop environments.

Where were these lamps originally used?

These adjustable lights served primarily as functional desk lamps in architectural offices, studies, and industrial workshops. Their directional beams provided necessary illumination for detailed drafting and clerical tasks. Over time, their striking modernist aesthetics transitioned them into domestic living spaces and display collections.
