Are these lamps converted antique vases?

Many examples utilise genuine nineteenth-century Chinese porcelain jars and vases that were later fitted for electricity, while others are European reproductions produced by factories like Samson. Makers often selected sturdy baluster or ginger jar forms to serve as stable bases for domestic lighting.

How do I identify a nineteenth-century piece?

Nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit hand-applied enamels, characteristic crazing in the glaze, and period mounting materials such as brass or ormolu. Examining the foot rim and the interior of the neck often reveals the age and firing method of the ceramic body.

What is the difference between famille rose and famille verte?

Famille rose relies on an opaque pink enamel alongside a pastel palette, whereas famille verte is defined by vibrant green translucent enamels. Both styles were developed during the Qing dynasty and later copied extensively by European porcelain manufacturers.

How should I clean a ceramic vase lamp?

Dust the ceramic body and any fabric or silk shade gently with a dry, soft cloth to avoid disturbing delicate hand-painted enamel details. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners on brass mounts or glazed surfaces to preserve the original patina and finish.
