What tools are in a set?

Standard fireplace tool groups typically consist of a shovel, a poker, and tongs for managing fuel and ash in an open grate. Many configurations also include a brush alongside these core implements. Depending on the specific suite, these tools may be accompanied by andirons, fire dogs, or a dedicated stand to hold the implements when not in use.

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as Victorian ornamentation, Gothic Revival elements, French Rococo influences, or later Arts and Crafts and Edwardian forms. Material combinations like steel and gun metal also offer clues. Construction methods and the presence of registration marks or specific casting styles help narrow down the production era to the nineteenth or early twentieth century.

Can I use them daily?

Most of these pieces were built for active service with coal or wood fires, utilising robust materials like cast iron, steel, and solid brass. Regular use is entirely practical for sturdy nineteenth and twentieth-century examples. Care should be taken with delicate decorative surfaces, painted finishes, or softer brass castings to preserve their condition during everyday hearth maintenance.

What is a companion stand?

A companion stand is a vertical holder designed to keep fireside tools organised and upright beside the hearth. These stands range from simple upright frames to decorative umbrella stands or figural holders. They serve both a practical purpose in keeping tools accessible and a decorative role in matching the aesthetic of the fireplace accessories.
