Treen describes small functional wooden objects made for domestic or personal use before mass production took over. These pieces range from kitchen implements and tableware to personal accessories like snuff boxes and knitting sheaths.

How old are these pieces?

The items span several centuries, with examples dating from the seventeenth century through to the Edwardian era. Most pieces belong to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, reflecting traditional domestic crafts and folk art.

What woods were used?

Makers utilised dense hardwoods such as fruitwood, sycamore, walnut, laburnum, and lignum vitae. These timbers offered the necessary grain and strength for detailed carving, turning, and heavy kitchen work.

How do I care for carved wood?

Keep wooden items away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature changes to prevent splitting. Occasional dusting and minimal handling help preserve the natural patina developed over centuries.
