What is an overmantel mirror?

An overmantel mirror is a large wall-hanging looking glass specifically proportioned to sit above a fireplace mantel. They were traditionally used to reflect candlelight and natural light around nineteenth-century rooms. On this page, these mirrors frequently feature carved wood and gesso frames with arched or shaped tops. They serve as primary decorative fixtures on chimney breasts.

How do I date a carved wooden fireplace surround?

Dating relies on identifying the underlying timber species, the character of the hand-carving styles, and construction methods. Nineteenth-century pieces often use pitch pine or oak alongside applied gesso ornamentation. Comparing stylistic cues such as Victorian Gothic revival or French Louis influence helps narrow down the period of manufacture. Original fixing points and surface patination further confirm age.

Where were fire screens placed?

Fire screens were positioned in front of hearths during warmer months when fires were not lit, or used by occupants to block radiant heat from their faces. They combined decorative utility with functional room division. Examples include brass and oak panels bearing coats of arms or carved hardwood frames. They represent portable elements of historic domestic hearth decor.

How should I clean a giltwood frame?

Giltwood and gesso surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent damage to the delicate metallic leaf. Moisture and modern cleaning chemicals must be avoided entirely. Preserving the original surface involves minimal intervention and protecting the timber from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations. Professional conservation is recommended for structural repairs.
