What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a historic form of bedside storage designed specifically to conceal a chamber pot behind a panelled door. These cabinets often feature compact proportions and enclosed upper surfaces. Today they serve as versatile bedside tables where the interior compartment provides hidden storage for books and modern bedroom accessories.

How do I choose a pair?

Selecting a matched pair requires examining the timber grain, carving details, and overall height to ensure visual symmetry beside a bed. Many nineteenth and early twentieth-century cabinets were constructed as pairs specifically for this purpose. Pay attention to minor variations in colour and hardware, as older pieces often display unique patination developed over decades of individual use.

Where were these cabinets used?

These cabinets were designed primarily for domestic bedrooms within grand houses, town residences, and country homes. They functioned as convenient stands for candlesticks, water jugs, and personal items before electric lighting. Their compact footprints allowed them to fit snugly into smaller dressing rooms and guest chambers without crowding the floor space.

How do I date a cabinet?

Dating a carved wood bedside cabinet involves looking at the timber species, construction techniques, and stylistic cues such as Georgian bracket feet or Arts and Crafts fretwork. Secondary woods inside drawers and the type of fixings also offer clues to the era of manufacture. Cabinet makers frequently incorporated design motifs popular during specific reigns, allowing collectors to attribute pieces to periods like the Edwardian era or the reign of Victoria.
