Why use camphor wood for storage?

Camphor wood emits a strong natural aroma that effectively deters moths and silverfish from damaging woollens and linens stored inside. The dense timber also resists moisture well, making it practical for maritime travel and humid climates.

How do I identify a campaign trunk?

These chests feature flush brass handles inset into the sides and reinforced metal corners designed to prevent damage during transit. They were built for military officers and travellers who needed sturdy luggage that could be stacked easily.

Are these chests heavy?

Solid camphorwood is moderately heavy, and the addition of brass hardware and iron straps adds considerable weight to larger trunks. Side carrying handles were essential for lifting them when fully loaded.

How do I care for the wood?

Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent the solid timber from drying out and splitting over time. A light application of appropriate furniture wax maintains the finish of the wood and the gleam of the brass.
