What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a portable piece of furniture designed for military officers on active duty. They are built to dismantle or separate for ease of transport. These pieces typically feature recessed brass handles and reinforced corners to endure rough travel conditions.

How were these chests used?

Officers used them to transport uniforms, documents, and personal belongings across land and sea. The robust construction protected contents from moisture and impacts. Many double as practical storage furniture or side tables in modern domestic interiors.

Are campaign chests made of solid wood?

Most examples utilise hardwoods such as mahogany, teak, camphor wood, or walnut. These durable timbers resist warping and heavy wear. Some utilitarian trunks employ pine or elm with iron bindings rather than brass.

How do I date a campaign chest?

Dating relies on timber choice, construction techniques, and stylistic clues from periods like the Georgian and Victorian eras. Brass hardware styles and dovetail joints also offer chronological markers. Records sometimes link specific pieces to named military figures or historical campaigns.
