How do you fold a coaching table?

Most coaching tables rely on an interlocking or hinged X-frame that allows the legs to pivot inwards after you lift the top clear. You simply collapse the scissor action until the wooden members lie parallel. Ensure any securing pins or brackets are released before folding to prevent strain on the brass hinges. The top then stores flat alongside the folded base.

What is the difference between a coaching table and a butler's tray?

A coaching table typically has a fixed or hinged top attached directly to a folding frame designed for immediate collapse. The whole structure packs down as one cohesive unit. Conversely, a butler's tray consists of a separate shallow wooden tray with raised edges that lifts off its folding stand. This allowed servants to carry the tray independently from the base.

How do I date a campaign table?

You date these pieces by examining the timber species, brass hardware types, and construction methods. Georgian examples often display lighter mahogany and hand-cut dovetails, while Victorian and Edwardian pieces utilise heavier turned legs and stamped brass components. Secondary woods and tool marks underneath the trays provide further clues to the period of manufacture.

Can I use these tables for daily dining?

These tables provide sturdy surfaces for occasional drinks, side storage, or laptop use in modern rooms. Their folding heritage means they adapt well to smaller spaces where permanent furniture is impractical. Care should be taken with hot plates or moisture on antique polished timber surfaces by using coasters and mats.
