What is a tallboy unit?

A tallboy unit is a vertically stacked chest of drawers designed to maximise storage floor space in a compact footprint. These pieces typically feature multiple graduated drawers arranged to hold substantial wardrobes.

How do I date a wooden tallboy?

Dating relies on observing construction techniques, timber choices, and stylistic cues from periods like the Georgian or Victorian eras. Drawer joints and hardware styles offer reliable physical evidence for establishing a period.

What woods were used for tallboys?

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised mahogany, walnut, and oak for their structural stability and rich grain patterns. Secondary woods like pine often appear in internal drawer linings and secondary panels.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy suits bedrooms or dressing areas where floor space is limited but vertical storage capacity is essential. Ensure adequate clearance for opening drawers fully against surrounding furniture.
