Where should I place a half moon table?

These tables suit narrow hallways, entrance spaces, and reception rooms where a deep rectangular table would block foot traffic. Their flat back allows them to sit flush against the wall while the curved front softens the room's geometry. They also work effectively in pairs flanking a fireplace, a doorway, or a large mirror. In living areas, a fold-over version can serve as a slim console until needed for entertaining.

What is the difference between a console and a side cabinet?

A console table is an open piece with legs supporting the crescent top, designed primarily for display or as a decorative accent against a wall. It leaves the space beneath open and visible. A side cabinet or sideboard incorporates enclosed storage space, such as cupboards or drawers, built beneath the top surface. These closed pieces offer utility for storing table linen or dining accessories while maintaining the same curved footprint.

How do I identify a Georgian piece?

Georgian tables typically exhibit solid timber construction, understated classical proportions, and fine craftsmanship using mahogany or oak. Details like tapered legs, subtle stringing, or straightforward brass hardware are characteristic of the period. Later revival pieces often incorporate heavier marquetry or more elaborate painted decoration, whereas 18th-century originals rely on the natural grain of figured wood and clean architectural lines.
