How do I hang heavy mirror wall lights?

These fixtures require secure fixing to solid wall studs or appropriate wall anchors to support the combined weight of the metal and glass. Professional installation is often recommended for heavier ormolu pieces. Ensure the mounting bracket engages firmly with the hanging loop or plate on the reverse of the frame. Testing the wall strength beforehand prevents any accidents.

Were these lights electrified originally?

Most of these antique wall lights were originally designed for candles rather than electricity. Many surviving examples retain their original candle branches and drip pans. Conversion for modern electrical wiring is common, though some buyers choose to use them with wax candles for traditional effect.

How do I clean brass and mirror glass?

Clean the brass frames gently with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can strip gilding or ormolu. Use standard glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than directly on the mirror plate. This prevents liquid from seeping behind the glass edges and damaging the silvering.

Can I use these lights in a bathroom?

Antique brass and mirrored sconces are generally unsuited to high-moisture environments like bathrooms. Dampness can tarnish the metal and degrade the mirror backing. Living rooms, hallways and dining rooms offer more stable conditions. These spaces also allow the reflective surfaces to catch natural and artificial light effectively.
