Are these lamps safe to use today?

Many older lamps require rewiring to meet modern electrical standards before daily use. Buyers should check the internal wiring and consult a qualified electrician. Original fittings can sometimes be retained, but modern flex and safe plug connections ensure the piece is fit for a contemporary desk.

How do I date a brass column lamp?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as the form of the capital, the composition of the base, and manufacturing methods like casting marks. Victorian and Edwardian examples often show distinct aesthetic preferences. Comparing the weight, metal finish, and any patent stamps helps narrow the decade of production between eighteen eighty and nineteen twenty.

Where should I place a column lamp?

These tall metal lamps suit studies, libraries, and large desks where their vertical proportion commands attention. Their height allows light to spread across a wide workspace. Pairing them with a traditional opaline or fabric shade completes the desk setup while keeping the brass column as the visual centrepiece.

What maintenance do brass lamps need?

Regular dusting with a soft cloth keeps the metal surface clear of debris. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip away the natural patination built up over decades. Leaving the aged finish intact preserves the historical character of Victorian and Edwardian examples found in the collection.
