How do I clean brass cherub candelabra?

Dust these pieces gently with a soft, dry cloth to protect the gilt or patinated surfaces. Avoid using harsh chemical polishes that can strip away original gilding or damage vulnerable marble bases. For stubborn grime, consult a specialist conservator rather than attempting aggressive cleaning methods at home. Preserving the original finish maintains the historical integrity of the metalwork.

Were these originally wired for electricity?

Nineteenth-century candelabra were originally designed exclusively for wax candles. Many examples have been adapted over time to function as electric table lamps or wall lights. When buying converted pieces, check the internal wiring and consult a qualified electrician to ensure safety. Unconverted pieces retain their original socket configurations for standard candles.

How do I identify Louis XVI style?

Louis XVI style is marked by a return to classical symmetry, straight architectural lines, and restrained ornamentation. This contrasts with the flowing, asymmetrical curves of earlier rococo designs. Look for motifs such as wreaths, classical urns, and orderly acanthus leaves on the base and candle arms. These structural cues help date the piece within the nineteenth-century revival periods.

Where should I display a garniture set?

Garniture sets look best displayed centrally on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or large console table. The symmetrical arrangement of a clock flanked by matching candelabra creates a balanced focal point in a room. Ensure the surface is sturdy enough to support the combined weight of the bronze and marble components. Keep them away from direct heat sources to protect any delicate surface patination.
