How were these coolers used originally?

Dining rooms in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lacked built-in refrigeration, so servants filled these wooden vessels with ice and water. Bottles rested inside to chill before being served at the table. After dining, households repurposed the same waterproof containers for plant displays or as general storage for plate and silver.

Can I use an antique cooler for plants?

Many surviving pieces double as planters or jardinieres because their metal linings already protect the timber from moisture and soil. Owners frequently place potted greenery inside them for display in reception rooms. Care should be taken to empty excess drainage water to preserve the internal lining and the surrounding staves.

What timber is most common?

Mahogany forms the vast majority of pieces seen on this page, particularly from the Georgian and Regency eras. Cabinet makers favoured it for its strength and rich grain pattern. Oak, walnut, and padouk appear less frequently, reflecting different regional preferences and specific colonial or Arts and Crafts workshops.

Are stands usually original?

Some vessels sit upon dedicated stands built as part of the initial design, while others function as table-standing buckets. Finding a piece retaining its original frame adds significantly to its integrity. Standalone buckets often sat directly on the floor beside the dining table rather than on legs.
