What is a bracket feet dresser?

A bracket feet dresser is a traditional storage piece, typically a chest of drawers or dresser base, supported by architectural corner feet rather than legs or a plinth. These pieces span the 18th century through to later revival periods, offering practical drawer space elevated by formal joinery.

How do I identify an 18th century chest?

Eighteenth century pieces display timber patination, hand-cut dovetails, and secondary woods consistent with the period of manufacture. Construction details and proportions reflect the changing styles of the Georgian eras, from George I walnut to late George III mahogany.

Where should I place a bachelors chest?

A bachelors chest fits well in a bedroom, study, or hallway where its pull-out slide provides convenient surface space. The compact proportions of these chests make them adaptable to smaller rooms without sacrificing storage capacity.

What is the difference between oak and mahogany pieces?

Oak pieces generally reflect earlier country or provincial English cabinet making, displaying a prominent grain and sturdy build. Mahogany and walnut examples often represent formal urban furniture, showcasing finer veneers, brass hardware, and decorative carving.
