What is blue glass enamel?

Blue glass enamel refers to decorative items that combine coloured glass bodies with fused vitreous enamel decoration. These pieces often feature painted floral motifs or geometric metalwork. They encompass everything from small scent bottles and vanity jars to larger decanters and vases produced across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

How do I date these items?

Dating relies on identifying stylistic markers, manufacturing techniques, and hallmarks stamped on silver components. Art Deco pieces display geometric lines, while Victorian items often show ornate floral painting. Assay office marks and maker signatures on the silver mounts provide precise manufacturing years for many twentieth-century items.

How were dressing table jars used?

Dressing table jars held powders, pins, and small cosmetics on nineteenth and twentieth-century vanity surfaces. Their decorative silver and enamel lids kept contents secure while adding colour to the room. Wealthy households displayed matching sets of these jars alongside scent bottles and matching trays.

How should I clean them?

Cleaning requires gentle handling, particularly around silver mounts and delicate painted enamel surfaces. Lukewarm water and mild soap suffice for the glass portions. Harsh chemical immersion and abrasive cloths must be avoided to protect both the metalwork and the fused enamel.
