Are these paintings supplied with their frames?

Most listings indicate whether the piece includes a period frame, such as a giltwood or ebonised moulding. These frames are frequently contemporary to the artwork or chosen to match the era. Check individual descriptions to confirm if the frame shown in the photography accompanies the sale.

How do I identify the period of a canvas?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, costume details, stretching techniques, and the ageing characteristics of the canvas and pigments. Seventeenth-century works often feature distinct canvas weaves and subject matter like ruff collars. Examine the reverse of the canvas and the frame construction for additional clues regarding age and origin.

Where should I hang a dark oil painting?

These works benefit from placement away from direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations to protect the oil paint and canvas. Spotlighting can enhance the dramatic chiaroscuro and dark backgrounds. Pairing a dark portrait with neutral walls allows the rich tones and gold leaf frames to stand out effectively in a room.
