What is a linen press?

A linen press is a large storage unit that combines upper cupboard doors with lower clothes drawers. Originally designed to store household linens flat on internal sliding trays, many now serve as general bedroom wardrobes. Lower drawer configurations vary from two short drawers over two long ones to deep single tiers. These units provide substantial capacity for folded garments and bedding.

How do I date a chest of drawers?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction techniques, handle styles, and overall proportions of the piece. Georgian pieces often feature bracket feet and mahogany carcases, whilst Victorian versions tend to be heavier with burr walnut or flame mahogany veneers. Drawer construction also offers clues, as handmade dovetails differ noticeably from later machine-cut joints. Secondary woods inside the drawers further assist in confirming the period of manufacture.

Are these drawers suitable for daily use?

These pieces function well for daily bedroom storage when selected with your specific space and clothing needs in mind. Solid wood construction ensures sturdy daily operation for storing garments. Drawers should slide smoothly within their runners, though historic timber can sometimes respond to modern home humidity. Regular waxing helps maintain the wood and keeps drawer actions running smoothly.

What is a compactum wardrobe?

A compactum wardrobe is a space-saving cabinet that integrates multiple storage compartments, including hanging space, drawers, and shelving, into one unit. They frequently appear in Edwardian and 1930s designs. These pieces suit modern bedrooms where floor space is limited but maximum storage is required. Their internal divisions allow for the organisation of both folded and hanging clothing.
