What did people store in antique wood containers?

These vessels held a wide variety of household goods depending on their size and form. Smaller boxes stored tobacco, snuff, or spices, while larger vessels managed salt, candles, cutlery, and firewood. Domestic routines dictated the design of each piece, ensuring contents stayed dry, organised, or close to the hearth for daily use.

How do I care for antique wood?

Keep wooden objects away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent timber from splitting or warping. Dust gently with a dry cloth and avoid modern chemical polishes. Applying a traditional beeswax occasionally helps nourish older surfaces and maintains the natural lustre developed over centuries.

How can I tell the period of a wooden box?

Examine the construction methods, tool marks, and fastener types used in the assembly. Hand-cut dovetails, handmade screws, and regional timber choices often indicate earlier centuries. Stylistic cues such as Georgian inlay or Edwardian hardware provide further clues to the date of manufacture when compared against documented examples.

What is the difference between treen and other wooden items?

Treen specifically refers to small utilitarian wooden objects created by turning on a lathe or through careful hand-carving. This category encompasses items like spice towers, cups, and small containers. Larger furniture items or structural architectural elements fall outside this definition, focusing instead on domestic smalls made for personal or tabletop use.
