How do I identify Hoshiarpur furniture?

Hoshiarpur furniture is distinguished by dense, all-over hand-carving of floral and geometric patterns combined with intricate brass wire inlay. The timber is often shisham or teak. These pieces frequently take the form of octagonal tables or tray-top occasional tables produced in northern India during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Is teak wood durable for everyday use?

Teak is an exceptionally dense tropical hardwood containing natural oils that resist moisture, warping, and insect damage. This makes it structurally stable and resilient. Antique teak items require little maintenance beyond regular dusting and occasional polishing to preserve the natural grain and deep brown colour of the timber.

Where was Anglo-Indian furniture made?

Anglo-Indian furniture was manufactured in Indian workshops by local artisans using regional timbers like teak, adapting traditional Eastern forms to British colonial tastes. Major centres included Bombay, Punjab, and Bengal. These workshops produced everything from heavily carved armchairs and display cabinets to folding tables intended for European houses in the subcontinent.
