What is an antique table basket used for?

These pieces served multiple domestic purposes depending on their form. Metal versions held fruit, sugar, or sweetmeats, whilst wooden variants functioned as sewing tables to store threads and needles. Today, they adapt easily to modern interiors as decorative centrepieces, storage for small accessories, or functional coffee table accents.

How do I date an antique table basket?

Dating relies on hallmarks for silver and silver-plated items, combined with stylistic markers of the period. Wood choice, such as Regency rosewood or Edwardian mahogany, offers clear clues for furniture. Examining construction methods like hand-cut dovetails or machine-rolled metal helps confirm the manufacturing era.

Are glass liners original to the baskets?

Many metal baskets retain their original coloured glass liners, including cranberry, ruby, cobalt, and vaseline glass. A snug fit usually indicates the glass belongs to the piece. Replacements do occur due to breakages, so checking the rim for proper seating is standard practice.

How do I care for a silver basket?

Silver and silver plate require gentle cleaning with appropriate polishes to maintain the metal surface without wearing down thin plating. Avoid harsh abrasives, particularly on pierced or repoussé areas. Glass liners can be washed separately in warm soapy water and dried thoroughly before replacement.
