How do I adjust a telescopic floor lamp?

Telescopic standards utilise an internal sliding mechanism secured by a thumbscrew or collar near the upper section of the shaft. Loosening this fastener allows the inner column to be raised or lowered to the desired height. Care should be taken to support the weight of the fitting and shade with one hand while adjusting the fastener with the other to prevent sudden drops.

What is a bouillotte lamp used for?

Bouillotte lights were originally designed as portable candle lamps for card playing, providing focused illumination over a small table. The adjustable shade could be lowered as the candles burned down. Today, these pieces function effectively as decorative desk or bedside lamps where direct, adjustable task lighting is required.

How do I distinguish brass from ormolu?

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a consistent golden metallic composition throughout the material. Ormolu consists of a bronze base applied with a mercury-gilding technique that produces a deeper, richer gold surface layer. Under close inspection, ormolu often reveals finer chasing work on decorative mounts compared to standard cast brass fittings.

Are these lamps wired for modern electricity?

Many antique and vintage reading lights have been rewired at some point in their history to comply with modern electrical standards. Fittings often feature standard lamp holders suited to contemporary bulbs. Buyers should examine the wiring or consult a qualified electrician to ensure the internal cord and plug meet current safety regulations before daily use.
