How do I choose the right size?

Consider the proportions of your bedroom and mattress requirements, noting that historic sizes can differ slightly from modern standard dimensions. Measure your available floor space carefully before selecting a single, double, or king size frame. Verify whether the bedstead accommodates standard modern slatted bases or requires specific mattress supports to ensure a proper fit.

Are iron and brass beds sturdy?

Cast iron and brass bedsteads offer robust structural integrity, utilising heavy metal components and secure joint fixings. Their weight ensures stability during daily use. Regularly check and tighten bolt connections to maintain frame rigidity over years of service.

How do I care for wooden finishes?

Dust wooden and veneered surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent accumulation. Avoid placing antique timber near direct heat sources or strong sunlight to protect the polish. Apply high quality beeswax periodically to nourish hardwoods like walnut and oak, preserving their natural sheen.

What defines French style bedsteads?

French style frames typically display curved profiles, painted surfaces, carved walnut, or detailed brass mountings. Designs often reference periods like Louis XVI or provincial traditions. These beds focus on decorative elegance and soft painted tones, suiting traditional and eclectic interior schemes.
