What is an antique silver ticket used for?

These pieces hang around the necks of decanters and wine bottles to identify the specific liquor contained inside. They served a practical purpose at formal dining tables before paper bottle labels became standard. Today, buyers use them to add historical authenticity and decorative polish to antique decanter sets during dinner parties or cabinet display.

How do I know what period my ticket is from?

Dating relies heavily on the silver hallmarks stamped onto the metal, which indicate the London or provincial assay office and the active year of the silversmith. Stylistic clues also help, as Regency and Georgian pieces often feature delicate bright-cut engraving while Victorian examples tend to be heavier. Reviewing the shape and lettering style alongside the hallmarks provides a clear indication of whether the item originated in the eighteenth, nineteenth, or twentieth century.

Can I hang these on modern decanters?

Most antique silver tickets come with their original silver chains or rings designed to fit standard bottle necks. They adapt easily to both antique and contemporary glassware. Care should be taken to match the size of the label to the proportions of the decanter so the silver hangs correctly without resting against the glass base.

Are matching sets difficult to find?

Sets of matching decanter labels appear less frequently than single pieces because individual tags often became separated over generations. When multiples do survive together, they usually identify standard table wines like sherry, port, and Madeira. Collectors prize matched sets for their uniformity and the difficulty of assembling them separately after the fact.
