What are antique silver fish servers used for?

These large specialised utensils serve boiled or baked fish at formal dining tables, featuring broad blades designed to lift delicate fillets without breaking them. Matched sets typically include a wide slice alongside a companion fork with tines shaped to separate flesh from bone.

How can I tell a Georgian fish slice from a Victorian one?

Georgian fish slices often exhibit hand-pierced geometric or floral patterns with simpler fiddle or Hanoverian handles, reflecting neoclassical or early 19th-century tastes. Victorian examples frequently display heavier cast ornamentation, naturalistic antler or horn grips, and more elaborate animal or aquatic engravings.

Are cased fish sets safe to use today?

Most solid sterling silver and silver-plated sets remain entirely functional for modern dining provided they are washed by hand rather than placed in automated dishwashers. Pieces with organic handle materials like horn or antique velvet-lined presentation cases require gentler handling and storage to prevent deterioration.

What is an articulated fish box?

An articulated fish box is a novelty container, such as a vinaigrette or a snuff box, constructed with segmented metal body joints that flex and move just like a real fish. Silversmiths achieved this effect by linking individual chased metal sections together with pins, often incorporating a hinged head that opens to reveal a small compartment.
