How do you clean an antique oak gong?

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry cloth and apply a neutral beeswax to nourish the oak surface. Polish the brass or copper sections sparingly with a suitable metal cleaner, taking care to avoid getting polish on the surrounding wood.

What rooms suit an antique oak gong?

These pieces sit naturally in entrance halls, dining rooms, or large living spaces where their acoustic properties can be appreciated. Wall-hanging versions require secure fixings into solid masonry or studwork to support the weight of the timber and metal.

The volume depends entirely on the thickness and diameter of the suspended metal disc and the material of the striker. Smaller table models produce a gentle, short chime, whereas larger floor-standing or wall-mounted examples project a deep tone across a house.

How are periods identified?

Stylistic clues such as heavy Victorian Gothic tracery, Edwardian refinement, or later geometric Arts and Crafts lines help date the wooden frame. Construction methods, screw types, and patination on the brass components offer further confirmation of age.
