What is an antique oak glass frame?

It is a piece of home furnishings built from oak timber that encloses or holds glass, most frequently taking the form of a wall mirror or a fitted container. These items range from simple domestic mirrors to ornate carved frames and locking drinks cabinets used in period interiors.

How do I date an oak frame?

Dating relies on observing the prevailing decorative styles, such as heavy Victorian carving, Arts and Crafts copper details, or Edwardian simplicity. The methods of joining the wood and the type of glass edge, such as hand beveling, also provide clues to the period of manufacture.

Where were these pieces used?

Mirrors were typically hung in hallways, over mantelpieces, or in dressing rooms to reflect light and practical living spaces. Barware and tantalus sets sat in dining rooms, studies, or drawing rooms to serve guests during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

How do I care for antique oak?

Keep the timber clean using a soft dry cloth and avoid placing the frame in direct sunlight or near sudden heat sources that could dry out the wood. Maintain the glass and mirror plates with standard non-ammonia cleaners applied sparingly to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame.
