What is an antique muff chain?

An antique muff chain is an exceptionally long necklace historically used to suspend a fur muff around the waist or neck. They date primarily from the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras. Today, these versatile chains are worn doubled or tripled as standard necklaces. Their generous length and historical dog clips make them favourites for modern layering.

How do you wear a long guard chain?

Guard chains are long enough to be slipped over the head in a single loop, or doubled and tripled around the neck for a layered effect. Many collectors attach lockets or pendants to the dog clip. The inclusion of a swivel dog clip means you can clip the ends together or secure a charm at the front. This adaptability is why they remain practical for daily wear.

What materials were used for muff chains?

The evidence shows these chains were constructed from nine carat yellow gold, nine carat rose gold, eighteen carat yellow gold, and eighteen carat white gold. Sterling silver and rolled gold also appear. Diamonds are occasionally incorporated into decorative sliders on Edwardian examples. The choice of metal often reflects the prevailing tastes of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
