What were glass swan dishes used for?

These pieces served primarily as tabletop containers for salt, condiments, or small sweetmeats during formal dining. Guests accessed the contents by lifting or moving the hinged wings attached to the glass body.

How do I clean an antique glass swan?

Wash the glass component gently in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Keep silver or plated metal parts dry and polish them separately with a dedicated cloth to avoid damaging the glass.

Are the wings on these pieces moveable?

Many examples feature articulated metal wings that lift up on hinges to reveal the hollow interior of the glass vessel. Fixed-wing versions also exist where the glass and metal form a solid, non-opening decorative dish.

How can I tell the age of a glass swan?

Examine any metal mounts for hallmarks, maker stamps, or registration numbers that provide a definitive year or decade of production. The style of the glass cutting and the wear patterns on the base also indicate the period of manufacture.
