How do I adjust a bouillotte lamp?

Most bouillotte lamps utilise a central key or screw mechanism on the vertical rod that allows you to raise or lower the metal shade to the desired height. This functional feature originally controlled the spread of candlelight as candles burned down during card games or reading sessions.

What is the difference between ormolu and brass?

Ormolu consists of a mercury-gilt coating applied over a bronze substrate, producing a deep, warm golden lustre that does not tarnish the way untreated brass does. Brass is a solid copper and zinc alloy whose surface patinates naturally over time through handling and exposure to air.

Where should I place a floor lamp?

Standard lamps and floor-standing reading lights work well beside an armchair or behind a sofa to provide focused illumination for reading or working. Heavier marble-based models require stable placement on level flooring to support their extended height.

How do I identify art deco lighting?

Art deco pieces from the nineteen-twenties and nineteen-thirties typically feature geometric shapes, stepped bases, and modern industrial materials such as chrome and bakelite. These designs move away from the ornate florals of the nineteenth century in favour of streamlined, functional silhouettes.
