What were rummers used for?

Rummers served as everyday and celebratory drinking vessels for ale, wine, spirits, and punch in homes and taverns. Their large capacities suited hearty toasts and communal drinking. Over time, larger versions functioned as table serving pieces while standard sizes remained personal drinking glasses for evening gatherings.

How do I date an antique rummer?

Dating relies on stylistic indicators such as bowl shape, stem form, and foot design, alongside the character of the glass metal. Georgian examples often feature thick lead glass with pontil marks, while Victorian pieces introduce pan bowls and etched decoration. Engraved motifs like specific ships, bridges, or fraternal symbols can also anchor a piece to a narrow historical window.

What is a lemon squeezer base?

A lemon squeezer base is a square, steeply moulded glass foot designed to provide extra stability for heavy rummers. The distinctive four-sided shape is pressed in a mould during manufacture. This feature appears frequently on English rummers from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

How should I display antique glass rummers?

These sturdy drinking vessels display well on stable wooden shelving or inside cabinets with adequate support for their weight. Because of their thick lead glass construction, they require simple placement away from edge hazards. Keeping them in natural light highlights the clarity of the clear glass and the fine detail of the wheel-engraved motifs.
