What is an antique commode dresser?

An antique commode dresser is a traditional storage item, most commonly catalogued as a chest of drawers or cupboard, originating from periods spanning the seventeenth to the early twentieth century. These pieces utilise solid woods like mahogany, oak, and walnut, functioning primarily for bedroom or living space storage while displaying distinct stylistic traits of their era of manufacture.

How do I identify a Georgian chest of drawers?

Georgian chests typically date from the eighteenth or early nineteenth century, featuring dense timbers like mahogany or oak, hand-cut dovetail joints, and characteristic proportions. Details such as bracket feet, brushing slides, and bow-fronted or serpentine profiles help distinguish pieces from this period compared to later Victorian or Edwardian alternatives.

What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a portable set of drawers built for military officers on the move during the nineteenth century. These items are constructed in separable sections to facilitate transport. They are readily identified by recessed brass handles, protective brass corners, and durable timbers such as camphor wood.

How do I care for antique wood furniture?

Living with antique wood involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and keeping pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Regular dusting with a dry cloth and occasional light application of appropriate furniture wax preserves the finish and natural grain of timbers like walnut, mahogany, and oak.
