What were antique christening mugs used for?

These small vessels served primarily as ceremonial gifts presented to infants at their christening or naming ceremony. Families often kept them as lifelong keepsakes rather than items for daily dining. Over time, many of these cups transitioned into decorative mantel or cabinet pieces, preserving the engraved initials and birth dates of their original recipients.

How can I date my silver mug?

Dating relies heavily upon the stamped hallmarks found on the exterior or base of the metal. These small official marks indicate the assay office and the exact year letter assigned to the piece. Stylistic indicators such as Victorian embossing or Edwardian plain forms also help narrow down the period of manufacture when hallmarks are worn.

Are silver plated mugs worth collecting?

Plated pieces produced through Old Sheffield plating or by notable nineteenth-century manufacturers offer an accessible entry point into antique silver collecting. They often display the same intricate engraving and form as solid sterling counterparts. Collectors appreciate the historical manufacturing techniques involved in fusing silver to copper bases during the Georgian and Victorian eras.

How should I clean an antique silver mug?

Maintaining these items requires gentle cleaning with a specialist silver cloth to remove tarnish without harming the underlying metal or rubbing away delicate engraving. Avoid harsh chemical dips that strip the natural ageing. Storing the vessel in a dry environment away from direct sunlight helps preserve the finish and prevents rapid retarnishing.
