What is soapstone used for?

Soapstone serves primarily as a medium for detailed figural carvings, brush pots, and scholar's desk groups due to its workable density. Artisans utilised its smooth texture for seals, mountain landscapes, and depictions of figures like Shoulao. Because the material takes fine incision work well, carvers rendered robes, hair, and mythical creatures with high definition. These pieces often exhibit natural colour variations ranging from cream to dark green.

How do you date stone carvings?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, tool marks, and the specific iconography associated with periods like the Qing Dynasty or the Republic Period. Archaistic pieces often reference earlier dynasties through specific motifs like taotie handles or qilin designs. Matching the stone type and the wear on any associated hardwood stand provides additional context for age. Pre-sixteenth century works typically display the weathered surface characteristics of early temple or tomb sculptures.

Are all green stones jade?

Not all green stones are jade, as artisans also worked with Bowenite serpentine, green marble, hardstone, and soapstone. Mineral composition and hardness distinguish true nephrite and jadeite from other green decorative stones. Each material reacts differently to light, touch, and carving tools. Close inspection of the surface grain helps clarify which mineral the carver employed.
