How do I clean antique bronze?

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush to remove surface particles. Avoid chemical polishes that strip original patination or damage gilt surfaces. For stubborn grime, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Were these electrified later?

Many nineteenth and twentieth century pieces have been converted to electricity for modern convenience. Original candle sockets are frequently adapted to house wiring without destroying the primary metal structure. Check the base or internal channels to see if wiring passes through original apertures.

How do I date an item?

Examine the stylistic cues, such as Neoclassical motifs, Victorian proportions or Regency lines. Construction marks, maker stamps and the type of plating also help determine the era. Comparing casting methods and screw types provides further clues to the manufacturing decade.

Can I use real candles?

Most antique pieces retain their original candle sockets and drip pans. Ensure candles fit securely in the nozzle to prevent tilting and wax spillage. Keep burning candles away from draughts and monitor them closely to protect the historic metalwork.
