How do I hang a heavy antique chandelier safely?

Heavy chandeliers require direct attachment to a ceiling joist using a rated structural hook rather than standard plaster fixings. The weight of solid brass and crystal demands professional weight-bearing assessment. Electrical wiring must also be evaluated by a qualified electrician to ensure the internal components can support modern voltage safely.

Can these fixtures be converted for modern electricity?

Most antique fixtures designed for candles or early wiring can be adapted for modern electrical standards without altering the visible metalwork. Rewiring involves running new internal heat-resistant cables through the central channels. Edison-style LED bulbs work well inside these frames, providing appropriate warmth while keeping heat output low.

What is the difference between ormolu and gilt brass?

Ormolu consists of a cast bronze base treated with mercury gilding, yielding a heavy, deep golden surface with high durability. It was widely used in French workshops for luxury mountings. Gilt brass is a lighter alloy treated with a gold wash or plating, offering a similar appearance at a different structural weight.

How should I clean crystal drops on a brass fixture?

Crystal elements should be removed individually and washed in warm water with a mild detergent, then dried with a lint-free cloth. Leaving the drops on the fixture while cleaning risks scratching the metal or leaving residue in the joints. Brass components require a soft dry cloth to preserve the existing surface patination without abrasive polishing.
