What is an antique book lamp?

An antique book lamp is a piece of period furniture or lighting equipment designed to facilitate reading, often combining a table, stand, or shelf with a light source. These items range from Edwardian occasional tables and oak bookcases to specialised reading lamp stands and sculptures from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

How do I date an antique book lamp?

Dating relies on identifying the stylistic markers of the piece, such as Arts and Crafts simplicity, Art Deco geometry, or Victorian timber choices like walnut and mahogany. Construction techniques, hardware, and secondary woods also help determine whether a piece originates from the nineteenth century or the 1930s and 1940s.

Where were these lamps used?

These items were placed in studies, libraries, and reception rooms to provide localized lighting and a stable surface for reading material. Their dual functionality made them practical additions to domestic interiors where space for separate reading desks and floor lamps was limited.

What woods are most common?

Oak, walnut, and mahogany appear frequently across the surviving examples, utilised for their durability and grain pattern. Ebonised wood, satinwood, and pine also feature in specific regional or stylistic groups, occasionally enhanced by inlay and cross-banding.
