What subjects appear in these paintings?

The artworks depict various vessels including fishing boats, merchant ships, and warships navigating coastal waters, canals, and riverways. Scenes frequently capture harbours, stormy seas, and quiet river landscapes across British and European locations.

How do I date the frames?

Frames typically correspond to the era of the painting, featuring nineteenth-century or Edwardian moulding techniques and gesso decorations. Original frames often show age-appropriate wear on the gilt surface that matches the canvas inside.

Where were these maritime scenes painted?

Artists recorded coastal and river views from British locations such as Cornwall, Whitby, and the River Thames. European destinations also feature prominently, including Dutch canals, French rivers, and Mediterranean shipping lanes.

How should I hang these artworks?

Select a wall with stable humidity away from direct sunlight to protect both the canvas and the gilt wooden frame. Ensure wall fixings can support the weight of the heavier nineteenth-century oil paintings and their substantial frames.
