How do I care for antique framed art?

Keep framed pieces away from direct sunlight and areas subject to high humidity to prevent paper degradation and wood warping. Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from the frame without touching the exposed painted surface. Avoid chemical cleaners on glass and giltwood surfaces. Professional conservators can advise on stabilizing delicate historical media.

Are original frames important for value?

Original period frames provide context and verify the historical integrity of the artwork they enclose. Matching the age of the frame to the artwork ensures a cohesive aesthetic presentation. Many collectors prioritize pieces retaining their initial framing because it records how earlier generations displayed the object.

What is the difference between an oil painting and a watercolour?

Oil paintings utilise pigments suspended in drying oils applied to canvas or wood panels, allowing for rich textures and deep colour blending. Watercolours use water-soluble pigments on paper supports, yielding transparent and luminous washes. Watercolours require protective glass covers, whereas traditional oil paintings on canvas typically remain unglazed.

How do I identify the age of an artwork?

Examine the materials used for the support, such as hand-woven canvas, early paper watermarks or wooden panel construction. Stylistic clues in costume, hair and background architecture also indicate the historical period. Signatures, dates and inscriptions on the reverse often provide direct evidence of the artist and year of creation.
